Rainbow Mountain, located in the Apu Ausangate region, is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in Peru. Its vibrant colors, formed by the unique mineral composition of the glaciers, create a stunning landscape. Vinicunca is now the second most visited destination after Machu Picchu, making it a must-see attraction for any traveler exploring Cusco.
We begin our adventure early at 4:00 am, taking the route through Cusipata, where we will stop for a breakfast break before continuing on our journey. The route will follow this path: Cusco – Cusipata – Phulawasipata (102 km, a mix of asphalt and carriage track). From Phulawasipata, we will begin a 3 km walk to reach Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). Please note that this hike requires some acclimatization due to the high altitude of over 5000 meters and the cold climate of the area. The annual average temperature ranges between 7 to 12 °C, with the coldest months being May, June, and July. Rainbow Mountain’s unique colors are due to the mineral composition of its landscape:
This striking landscape, shaped by these minerals, is what gives Rainbow Mountain its incredible array of colors.
