Information

The Sacred Valley of the Incas, located north of the city of Cusco in the Peruvian Andes, spans approximately 100 kilometers. This picturesque region is traversed by numerous rivers that flow through streams and small valleys, offering a wealth of archaeological monuments and vibrant indigenous communities. Known for its slightly milder climate compared to Cusco, the Sacred Valley lies at an elevation of 2,800 to 2,900 meters above sea level.

Here, you can marvel at diverse archaeological sites surrounded by stunning natural and cultural landscapes. Each attraction is unique, as the valley boasts the highest concentration of Inca heritage in Peru. Highlights include Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Moray, and the salt mines. These sites feature everything from cave paintings and archaeological complexes to ancient structures, streets, and insights into the economic activities of local communities. Together, they make the Sacred Valley one of the most popular destinations for visitors seeking to immerse themselves in Inca history and culture.

The tour begins with pickups from hostels between 6:15 and 6:30 AM, heading to the Sacred Valley of the Incas (VIP). Our first stop is Chinchero, a charming town where you can admire agricultural terraces and the remnants of Tupac Inca Yupanqui’s royal treasury. Chinchero is renowned for its well-preserved Inca walls in the main square and its beautiful colonial temple built atop Inca foundations.

Continuing our journey, we arrive at Maras and Moray, a unique archaeological site. Here, you’ll see massive natural depressions in the earth, transformed into agricultural terraces with sophisticated irrigation systems. The temperature differences between the top and bottom levels of these terraces highlight Moray’s role as an important center for acclimatizing and hybridizing wild plant species for human consumption.

Next, we visit the salt mines located 7 kilometers northwest of Maras. Known as «Las Salineras,» these 3,000 small pools are built along the mountainside of Qaqawiñay. During the dry season, saltwater from a nearby spring fills these pools every three days. As the water evaporates, the salt gradually solidifies over a month-long process, producing high-quality salt.

We then proceed to the fortress and citadel of Ollantaytambo, a site constructed to guard the valley’s entrance and protect it from potential invasions. You’ll have the chance to walk through the town’s ancient streets, gaining insight into how this military, religious, and cultural hub functioned during the Inca Empire.

Finally, we visit Pisaq, where you’ll explore an impressive archaeological zone and a bustling craft market, concluding the tour with a glimpse into the rich history and vibrant culture of the Sacred Valley.
